Foul-weather friend

foul weather friend

Painting by Leonid Afremov

“We all need “foul-weather friends” who will venture out into the weather with us.”

Holley Gerth, from “Rain on Me:  Daily Moments of Hope and Encouragement”

Isn’t that the truth?  Solid friendship is built, not on the fun times, as great as they are, but on the dismal, despair-filled seasons when true friends shine like bright stars against the inky backdrop of a long, dark night of the soul.

“A true friend loves regardless of the situation, and a real brother exists to share the tough times.” Proverbs 17:17

God’s constant promise is that He will never leave or forsake us, a promise that is restated throughout Scripture.  I’m grateful that He is the ultimate “foul-weather friend”!

Happy Sunday!  Join me over at The Sunday Community.

  1. I hope I am being that kind of friend to others. I need that kind of friend in my life.

  2. Love this… Friends help us bear each other’s burdens. God takes care of us through friends, doesn’t he?

And ultimately, our Loving Heavenly Father is with us through it all…

  3. Solid friendship is very important. Our world is so full of NOT having friendship, b/c of different visions of what’s coming down the path. As usual, you put good thinking out for many people. Appreciated.

    • Thanks, Joanne. Solid friendship is the foundation for heart-health and soul survival. Friends can breathe fresh life into us when we are limp rag dolls!

  4. I have a friend going through a really rough time and I hadn’t seen in her in ages. I ran into her today at the market and it was just an instant and long hug. It was so good to see her, and she was just..she’s going through TERRIBLE times. My heart is with her.
    This is timely for me!

  6. I love that phrase you created about friendship and how it ties in with that beautiful painting! Friends are so important. I’ve found sometimes I truly would love to have ones in real life. I just talk to my husband about it and we talk about me being patient and allowing it all to happen in God’s timing. 🙂

    • Brittnei, friends are a gift from God to keep us healthy, just as much as food and water and other items that nourish the body. I pray that He will send you good friends who will go through good and bad times with you!

  7. Awesome post. Just stumbled upon your blog while I was doing a study on Christians and love music.

  12. I love this! True friendships are supposed to be able to weather any storm. I think that is why I had to let a few go, as I grew closer to God and began changing my life. My church family have become my friends and mostly I have a friend in God that is ever present! Thanks for this!

  16. Great Post! I am happy as can be a loner introvert. However, I have a handful of wonderful friends in Christ who I can turn to when I am in need of prayer, wisdom and/or discernment and I hope to be that person for them. I also know we are made for fellowship so I make it a point to crawl out of my hole and become join in, even if it is once a month.

  33. Brilliant post! Way to teach a lesson about quality over quantity. It’s easy to be a ‘friend’ when no sacrifice is required, but the foul weather friend is worth holding onto with both hands, both feet and some hair if you can work that out. 38. YES! True friendship, in many ways, is about the harder times than the better ones. That’s where the relationship bonds are not only tested, but can be strengthened (with the right person). Foul-weather friend may not sound so pretty, but I think it is a beautiful sentiment! Stopping by from #SITSBlogging comment love tribe!

  39. My ride or die friend has been with me since 10th grade and that wasn’t yesterday. Our attitude is “If one of us has to roll a body up in a rug the other one would be there to help carry it into the woods…no questions aced”. Ok well now that I’m older I’m not that extreme LOL. But it’s awesome to be a foul weather friend and to have one. Stopping by from SITS and looking forward to getting to know you.
