Getting my gratitude on

It’s been real the last few days, work-wise and health-wise.  I feel like I’m coming off of the rough side of the mountain, so I’m getting my gratitude on!  Thank you, Lord, for bringing me through!

I’ll be linking up with Lizzi at Considering for her weekly Ten Things of Thankful blog hop.  I last linked up with her at Thanksgiving, but it’s time for me to be thanks-giving in a big way again.

1.  Spring!

Can I share with you how much I’m over winter?  It’s officially spring as of today, and I’m  looking forward to this type of weather and scenery.

Me and the cherry blossoms

Cherry blossom time in D.C.: delightful!

2.  Completing a major work project in record time

When the going gets tough, God shows up and carries me through.  I had a daunting challenge at work, and time and resources were working against me.  Yesterday I was relieved to hand the project in after much overtime, hitches, glitches, and stress.  I truly was carried on eagles’ wings and …

3.  The support of cooperative coworkers

Unity truly is strength, and it’s a huge blessing to be working with people who will go the extra mile and not give you grief in the process.  Ladies, I appreciate and honor you.  You’re the best!   May you be repaid for your willingness, flexibility, and commitment to doing your work well.

4.  Less than a month until I visit St. Kitts

I’ll only be there for a week, but any time spent with friends and family is a good time.  I know the snow will be well behind me, but relaxing on the beach, celebrating my Mom’s birthday with her, and spending Easter with family:  priceless!

Where I'll be in a month!

Where I’ll be in a month!

5.  The Sole Hope project

Back in November, I was introduced to the Sole Hope project, which provides shoes, made from jeans and other fabric, for children in Africa who are prone to develop jiggers in their  feet.  I threw out the idea of hosting a Sole Hope shoe party on my Facebook page and got a good response, so I’ve bought my Sole Hope shoe kit and will be hosting a shoe cutting party next month.  If you’re interested, hit me up in the comments, on FB, or through e-mail.

6.  Jesus Feminist for $1.99 on Kindle?  Yes!

I’d read a sample of Jesus Feminist and knew I wanted to buy it.  My intention this Lent was to cut back on spending, so no new books.  Well, hello!  How could I pass up Sarah Bessey’s Jesus Feminist, which was on sale yesterday on Kindle for $1.99?  Thanks again, Sheila Seiler Lagrand, for the heads-up on this deal.  Sweet!

7.   No vet trips so far this year!

The head of the household (no, it’s not me!) has been well for the entire winter; we have not had to see Dr. Bob or Dr. Kris since last fall.  For that, I’m extremely grateful.  Just stepping into the vet’s office is almost $100.  Pet lovers, you feel me, I know.  So here’s a prayer that this healthy streak will continue.

Isn’t she a love? Excuse her b**chy resting face; she was progging (unsuccessfully) for food.

8.  Natural remedies to the rescue

I truly dislike having to take conventional medicine, but I felt sufficiently sick last week that I agreed to the doctor’s recommendations.  They made no significant difference.  My girl Tricia suggested some slippery elm bark.  Let me tell you:  that stuff was the hook-up!  I’m a healed woman.  Glory!

9.  A snow day on Monday

As much as I’m over the snow, I was glad to be home on Monday.  My very kind neighbor shoveled for me, so that sweetened the deal even more!  This scene?  Hopefully I won’t be seeing it for another eight or nine months.

Hasta la vista, winter!

10.  New recipes

I love trying out new recipes and adding new ingredients to my cooking repertoire.  My friend Michelle at A Dish of Daily Life has been serving up some yummy recipes, and Pasta with Salmon and Leeks gets a “two thumbs up” from me.  Give it a try, guys!

Pasta With Salmon and Leeks

Ten Things of Thankful

What are you thankful for this week?

  1. Great things of thankful! I too am so thankful for spring being today and for Michelle’s awesome recipes. And natural medicines.

  2. Isn’t she adorbs? She is quite the character, but I’m so grateful for her presence. She makes me laugh with her antics and is really good company. Spring here in MD has started out magnificently: sunshine, mild temps, slight breeze. Yes! Finally!

  3. Awww….I love kitties and yours is very cute! I hear you on the vet bills…we have 7 pets. Thanks so much for the shout out…I am so glad you liked that recipe! It’s one of my favorites.

    • I have no idea how you do it with seven pets, Michelle! But I know you love each and every one with all your heart. That makes it worth it.

Just had lunch: pasta with salmon and leeks. This is among my top recipes now. Thanks again!

  4. Spring I have been waiting for it for so long take that snow picture down now lol. I love cats too I love pasta but it’s not good for my health gotta cut back….after I try this one.
Kita recently posted..A Historical Overview of Career Trends in the USMy Profile

    • LOL Kita, I really should take that winter pic down, especially after a lovely entrance to spring today. The recipe is worth trying before you cut back on pasta. Use whole wheat pasta; that’s what I did!

  5. St. Kitts would be fun to go (even better for you since you have family!!) – maybe one day!!
Sorry you’ve been sick but glad that you are better now!! Hopefully spring will be the end of so many illnesses!
Kim recently posted..Learning to Let GoMy Profile

    • I truly hope spring won’t bring allergies, Kim. I’m normally not greatly affected by them, but after the last few weeks, who knows? LOL And you have to visit St. Kitts! It’s worth the trip, and it’s not as touristy as some of the better known Caribbean destinations.

  6. You have got some fantastic things to be thanksful for this week. I am so happy you were able to hand in your project in time and properly! You are a rock star 🙂 Thank you for the book recommendation, you can’t beat $1.99! I know you are too excited to go see your family!! 🙂

    • Yes, Nellie, the 1.99 deals on Kindle and the free books are a strong temptation for me as a bookworm. Discipline and self-control, where are you? LOL I may have a second round of that work project beginning tomorrow. Hoping against hope that it will not be as intense as last time. Ah, by the sweat of our brow do we eat bread! LOL

  7. Great things to be thankful for Alison! Nice to hear you’ll be going to St.Kitts [even though for a short time] I was there last September for a month..was really great! So you have fun! 🙂
Yvonne I. Wilson recently posted..9 Uplifting Gratitude QuotesMy Profile

    • Yvonne, it’s good to know that you got a chance to visit my island. I always enjoy hearing that folks who have seen St. Kitts had a good time there. And although it’s going to be a short trip, it will be well worth the while.

  8. Great post! I’m gonna get my gratitude on too, thanks for the motivation. I’m so glad the slippery elm did wonders for you, it’s a staple in my house. Lylas

  9. I bet after this winter ALL Y’ALL up north is welcoming the spring. Me on the other hand – it’s not my favorite. I get cabin fever in the spring because it’s so beautiful and I can’t go out (shouldn’t). I don’t like taking meds either so my best bet is not to play in the spring. So what is the Slippery Elm Bark for? I wish I could find something natural for spring allergies. Love that picture of you.
Kenya G. Johnson recently posted..We’ve come this far by technology…My Profile

    • What type of allergies do you get, Kenya? I get headaches and itchy eyes. I use Similasan Allergy Eye Relief. It’s natural eye drops, and it works wonders. The French company Boiron has a range of products that help as well. I used their Sabadil last month when I was all itchy and sneezy.

Slippery Elm Bark is good for stomach-related problems, but also for coughs and sore throats. Check out this link for more info: http://bit.ly/Q1H8jJ

  10. It’s STILL snowing, geesh! Your shoe party sounds really cool. I wish I could participate or maybe in the future I’ll look into hosting!

I am thankful that this first week of me working dayshift went extremely well.

  11. Hi Ali! Those cherry blossoms look so beautiful. And so do you! What a smile 🙂

We got some snow yesterday, with more in the forecast for next week. Sigh. But I love all the things you are thankful for. Are you from St. Kitts? What a wonderful get-away that will be. Especially to see family.
So glad that your kitty has been so healthy this year!

  12. Hey Ceil! Yes, I’m from St. Kitts, well… born in England but raised in St. Kitts. My parents are from there.

We might get some snow too, next week, on the tail end of the system that’s supposed to hit north of us (NY, DE, MA) by midweek. Winter, we are officially no longer an item! LOL

    • Hi Maria! Thanks for the kind words. Today is a lovely spring day and I’m about to go enjoy what’s left of it. Spring is a great incentive to get your projects completed, too!

  15. Alison I am not typically a cat person but I gotta say she looks like she has a bit of an attitude and i could get into a kitty like that… she is so cute with that face on! Sounds like tough spots this week but all reframed into good outcomes… lets hope for a quick end to winter and the duldrums that comewith it!

    • Indeed, Zoe! Winter be gone! Ms. Cassie the cat is quite the diva. Today she gave me a very hard time because the carpet cleaners came and she didn’t want to stay out of their way. Not good! She’s still in time out. Gotta love her! You have a great weekend, Zoe.

  16. I so looking forward to spring weather as well Alison. I totally understand about those vet bills.

  17. Ah, welcome back, Alison 😀 Glad you’re joining us again. I can’t believe it’s been so long, and you sure have some good things to be thankful for this week. I’m most pleased for you for your holiday to St Kitts. What a gorgeous place to be able to go and spend some chill-out time! Wow!

I hope your snow goes away VERY soon, and that you get more and more cherry blossom until summer is here 😀

    • Hey Lizzi! I’m truly hoping for the snow to make a hasty exit, but they’re calling for some sort of wintry mix Tuesday into Wednesday. Ugh! And today was considerably colder than yesterday. Still, I’m not complaining. I’ll be homeward bound in less than a month, so that’s cause for celebration.

It’s always a pleasure to participate in TToT. I hope to become a much more regular participant.

      Hugs,

  18. THOSE CHERRY BLOSSOMS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Spring just can’t get here fast enough this year. I promise I will not complain in August when it’s 100 degrees, humid, and I’m having a hot flash, all at the same time.
Love your kitty! My husband always says “There won’t be any kitty dialysis” about vet visits, but he loves our three kitties just as much as the rest of us and would spend quite a bit to keep them healthy, if he had to. Glad yours is feeling well! Love her grumpy face!
I looked up slippery elm on WebMD. Quite a list of ailments it can help with. Sooo, did you get rid of your tapeworm? 🙂

    • Hey Dyanne! I’m with you re: not complaining when it gets hot and ugly in the summer, in the midst of a hot flash! LOL I hear your hubs re: kitty dialysis, but we love them too much to let them suffer, right? I’m still using the slippery elm. We’ll see how it goes. I see great benefits from using it for sure!

      Have a great week, Dyanne!

  19. please post pics from your trip to st. kitts. it looks like heaven!

  20. Oh, the cherry blossoms look so pretty. We won’t be getting any blooms for a while yet. Spring may be here according to the calendar, but here in Indy, we’re going to be up to 20 degrees below for the next 4 days. I’ve about had it.
I love seeing people getting involved in good causes. Hope your shoe cutting party goes well!
Have fun in St. Kitts. Trips with family can be so fun.
Glad to see you back at the TToT!

  21. Thanks for sharing this wonderful lis! Glad spring has sprung!

    • Me too, Michelle. It’s about time! LOL Even though this morning is no indication that spring is here. It was 23 degrees when I first checked the weather this morning.

  22. Wonderful list: books, natural medicines, adorable cat, delicious food and snow days!!! xoxox jean 🙂

  23. These are all great things to be thankful for! I am over the moon about Spring finally being here. And I’m so happy that you’ll be going to St. Kitts to be with family, soon. I hope you take plenty of pictures to share with us 🙂

Thanks for sharing the pasta with salmon and leeks recipe! I’m heading over there now to check it out! And thanks also for the heads up on Jesus Feminist. It looks like a great book. My mom and I can read this for our next reading 🙂

I’m going to look more into Sole Hope, too. Such a great cause!

Hope you’ve had a beautiful weekend, Ali!

  24. It does my heart to see everyone so excited for Spring this week! After the winter all of you have endured, I can understand.
I went to St. Kitts in January and it was wonderful! I hope you enjoy the trip and I’m sure you will. Doesn’t Michelle post the greatest recipes? I know she has to be a great cook and that particular recipe looked soooo good. I’m not a salmon fan but I plan to make it with another fish, or perhaps chicken.
I love the idea of natural remedies. I’m not really a medication fan, either so I am glad to hear you were able to find something that worked so well for you.
I’m glad to see you made it back to the TToT, Alison!

      Have a great week, Sandy!

  27. Oh, I hear you on Spring! I was so excited and we had some lovely weather. Today it’s snowing. Say what?!?

What a lovely place to vacation. I love the beach.

What are jiggers? And what is slippery elm bark good for?
Carla recently posted..What’s Really Behind My Fitness GoalsMy Profile

    • It’s snowing right now, Carla, but at least the roads aren’t slippery. They say it’ll only accumulate on the grassy areas. We’ll see! Really longing for the real Spring to show up so that I can ditch these boots and sweaters and coats.
Jiggers are a type of parasite that can infest the feet and cause huge problems. It’s a common problem in many African countries and can be avoided if children in particular are able to wear shoes and not have their feet come into contact with the parasites.
