Monday Melody – A Mighty Fortress

Hey hey hey!  It’s December, the best month of the year!  I’m biased, of course; it’s my birth month.  A shout out to all my fellow December people!  Don’t we all have the very best time in December? 🙂

Song/Album: “A Mighty Fortress” on the album “Life Light Up” by Christy Nockels.

Why it made the cut:  I have been a fan of Christy Nockels ever since she and her husband Nathan wowed me with their awesome worship songs as the duo Watermark.  This particular song, off her first solo album, immediately struck me as an anthem for all time.

With traces of Psalm 91 weaving through it, this “Mighty Fortress” is less militant than but equally confident as the traditional hymn of the same name.  It causes us to marvel at the God who shows His Father-love to us, yet brings us into a state of awe and wonder with His splendor and holiness.  In response, we turn our gaze to Him, the One who is able to keep us from falling.

Artist: Christy Nockels is recognized as a worship leader and songwriter, having honed her craft for more than 15 years, first as part of the duo Watermark and now as a solo artist.  She and her husband Nathan have been a part of the Passion Conferences, which aim to stimulate spiritual awakening among college-aged young adults, since 1997.  Her stated desire is to help people communicate intimately with God and to proclaim Christ to this generation.

“When I write and lead songs, she says, “often I imagine and picture a generation grasping who God is and responding to Him inside of and in spite of the current circumstances of our world and our surroundings.  This song [A Mighty Fortress] was written with a heart to support and cradle that kind of powerful revelation and response.”

Favorite lyrics:

We will keep our eyes on You
We will keep our eyes on You
And we will set our hearts on You
Lord, we will set our hearts on You

Sweet spot:  I love the power behind the slow build-up from 2:52 to the end.

Love it, can you imagine blasting this on your way to work especially if the sunrises as you make your way. I imagine blasting it on 295 while I mess it up in worship with my beautiful voice.

  4. @AnonymousLOL at the beautiful voice part. A joyful noise unto the Lord is always beautiful!
