“He Reigns” by Newsboys on the album Adoration: The Worship Album.
I’m not a huge Christian rock fan, but the jamming, guitar-heavy beat of “He Reigns,” mixed with its focus on worldwide praise and worship, drew me in–hook, line, and sinker!
I first heard heard “He Reigns” sung at an African-American church, so when I heard the original version, with then lead Newsboys vocalist Peter Furler’s Australian accent oozing through the lyrics, I was a bit taken aback. But not for long!
“He Reigns” is the total package: catchy rhythm and swag-filled sound nestled within a worship anthem that is global in scope and detail. Poetry and Scripture merge, with references to Revelation 14:6 and to the melding of earthly praise with that of the heavenly hosts. And satan is put on notice that he can’t do nothin’ when we all get in praise mode!
Transcendent praise is unlimited by geographical and ethnic boundaries. Hallelujah–the highest praise–gives God the recognition and honor due to Him along. He reigns!
