I’m here, still stunned by Whitney Houston’s death. I can only shake my head in sadness. I’m out of words. Guys, life is short. Only what’s done for Christ truly matters. My heart goes out to her mom, daughter, and other relatives.
Song/Album: “I Worship You” by Mary Mary on the album “The Sound.”
Why it made the cut: This song reminds me that despite all the negatives that were stacked against me, Jesus turned each one into a positive, and He gets all the glory. He did, indeed, take everything that I was and made me into the person I am today. It’s a sobering reminder of the grace that keeps me going every day, but it also causes me to turn my eyes heavenward in worship to God in awe of the sacrifice He made for me.
Artist: Erica and Tina Atkins-Campbell came to prominence in 2000 as the mega duo Mary Mary with their debut album “Thankful” and the hit song “Shackles.” Brewing a potent mix of soul, jazz, and hip hop, the sisters are considered among the architects of urban praise and worship, along with Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin.
Mary Mary enjoy wide crossover musical appeal, not only among Christian listeners but in the R & B and soul genres, as their powerful voices and relatable lyrics draw many young listeners to their upbeat messages of inspiration and faith. They continue to rack up awards, including, to date, seven Dove Awards, 10 Stellar Awards, and three Grammys.
And I’m filled with so much gratitude
That words are not enough
To explain the magnitude
The passion of my love
Sweet spot: The vamp at 3:21.
