Monday Melody – Magnify

Here’s hoping you had a great weekend!  I hung out with my girl Blanche on Saturday and got caught up on some shopping–even Christmas shopping!  (Don’t laugh!)  The weather was picture perfect.   Well, on to another week  … and month!  Let’s believe God to do miracles for us!

Song/Album: “Magnify” by Byron Cage on the album Byron Cage – Live at New Birth Cathedral.

Why it made the cut:   “Magnify” is a lively call to worship that hinges on a vital concept:  God is worthy of the greatest praise possible.  Simple lyrics are given polish and shine through Byron Cage’s delivery, with a great assist by a bevy of top back-up singers, including Yvette Williams, Nikki Potts, and Nikitta Clegg of the Kurt Carr Singers.  Kurt Carr himself directs the singers, and the incomparable Jonathan DuBose Jr. on guitar is an added treat.

I always associate this song with a very vibrant dance performance of it by Spirit Wings Dance Company a few years ago.  It always stuck with me because of the clarity and power of the song’s message and its upbeat presentation, both vocally and instrumentally.  Bless Him!

Artist: Byron Cage, the Prince of Praise and Worship, is known for his energetic ministry and his ability to lead believers into heartfelt praise and worship.  This Michigan native has been on the gospel music scene professionally for two decades but performed his first church solo at age four!  Byron would go on to master the saxophone and keyboards, as well as his vocal skills.

Cage was privileged to tour and perform with the legendary Thomas Whitfield, and he strengthened his musical skills with a full scholarship to Morehouse College.

Byron’s self-titled first solo project won him five Stellar awards, and his follow-up solo album, An Invitation to Worship, brought him his first Grammy nomination.

Byron has served as the Minister of Music at Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington, MD, and is now also Minister of Music at St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.  His most recent CD, Memoirs of a Worshiper, debuted in June this year.

He is so worthy of all the praise
Oh come magnify Him, Jesus is His name!
