Song/Album: “One True and Holy Passion” by William Murphy III on the album All Day.
Why it made the cut: The distinctive tenor of William Murphy, melded with the sweet soprano of Kalilia Wilson, brings renewed vigor to a praise and worship chorus written by renowned songwriter Mark Altrogge some 20 years ago. Add to that blend the beautiful acoustic guitar work of Jesse Gonzalez, formerly of El Trio de Hoy, and you have a worship experience par excellence.
I love how the lyrics target the word “one.” The all-consuming, undistracted focus of believers should be on the One, presenting to Him, as the song states, our passion, obsession and ambition. Psalm 27:4 comes to mind with its emphasis on the one thing that counts: God’s presence.
Note, too, that we’re called not just to follow, but to “follow hard” after God. We should be sold out to the Lord! As He leads, friends, let’s follow hard!
Artist: Detroit native William Murphy comes from a long line of pastors and worship leaders.
“Church is what I’ve known all my life,” he says. “My family is rich in the heritage of the Gospel, in spoken-word ministry as well as music. That was the foundation I grew up on.”
Murphy, famous for penning the worship classic, “Praise Is What I Do,” began singing at age 14 and segued naturally into the roles of church elder and worship leader. He would later be encouraged by Bishop Paul S. Morton to advance in the use of his gifts , and in 2001 William began a stint as Senior Minister of Worship at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
Murphy and his wife Danielle have been the lead pastors at the dReam Center Church in Atlanta since 2006.
Give me one pure and holy passion
Give me one magnificent obsession
Give me one glorious ambition for my life
To know and follow hard after you
