I attended the homegoing service of a great friend and brother in Christ yesterday. I sang the worship songs with joy in the midst of grief, knowing that in Christ we have assurance of a place in that heavenly country. What a blessing to be found in Christ!
Song/Album: “Speak to My Heart” by Donnie McClurkin on the album Donnie McClurkin.
Why it made the cut: “Speak to My Heart” was my introduction to Donnie McClurkin, and what an introduction it was! The song climbs from a simple, almost plaintive beginning to a thunderous climax, buoyed along by McClurkin’s nimble tenor and the sweet background vocals by Angie and Debbie Winans.
Donnie wrote the words and music of “Speak to My Heart,” a prayer from a believer to God in which he places supreme faith in God’s ability, through the Holy Spirit, to provide counsel, strength, protection, and healing. It’s a reminder that we can go nowhere substantial without a clear word from the Lord. He truly is our shepherd!
Artist: New York native DonnieMcClurkin has pressed through a childhood fraught with abuse and violence and a debilitating illness to become one of the stars of 21st century gospel music.
He began playing music as an adolescent and formed his first singing group, the McClurkin Singers, when he was a teenager, and later formed the New York Restoration Choir.
Donnie served as associate pastor at Marvin Winan’s Perfecting Church in Detroit and in 2001 established Perfecting Faith Church in New York, where he is the senior pastor.
The winner of three Grammys, 10 Stellar awards, two Soul Train awards, one Dove award, and one NAACP Image award now has a radio show and has ventured into his own television show, Perfecting Your Faith, on cable TV.
Donnie is one of the three judges of BET’s Sunday Best gospel singing competition, and is currently on tour with Kirk Franklin, Israel Houghton, and Marvin Sapp as part of the King’s Men.
Speak to my heart, Lord,
Give me Your Holy Word
If I can hear from You
Then I’ll know what to do!
