Monday Melody – Stand

Temperatures dropped, rain fell, and I reveled in hibernating this weekend.  Sometimes, like one of my good friends likes to say, you have to fall in love with your house and enjoy it fully. This was one of those weekends!  Now… back to reality!

Song/Album: “Stand” by John P. Kee on the album Stand.

Why it made the cut:   “Stand” came out in 1996, but it’s as relevant today as it was 16 years ago–if not more so!  When I first heard it, it truly convicted me.  Would I be willing to give up a best friend to follow Christ?

With simple yet deep lyrics, Pastor John P. Kee describes the high personal cost of following Christ and exhorts us to choose righteousness and holiness every time.  Talk about a word in due season!

Pastor Kee’s signature raspy vocals and ad libs, contrasted with the dulcet notes hit by Ivan “I.P.” Powell, are the star attractions of this song, along with the challenging modulations ably handled by the Victory in Praise Mass Choir.

“Stand” is an anthem for our day, when so many issues are pulling believers away from the foundational truths of Christianity.  It challenges to step up our game and know whose we are.  May we choose, in courage and faith, to stand, and remain standing!

Artist:  The dramatic story of John P. (Prince) Kee, the “Prince of gospel music,” truly points to the hand of God in his life.

Kee began to create his own music at age 9 and attended a school for musically gifted children.  However, in his late teens he fell into a destructive lifestyle of drugs and violence.  The death of a close friend involved in drugs became a turning point at which he surrendered to God and devoted himself to gospel music.

Kee became an ordained minister in his mid-twenties and is the senior pastor of New Life Fellowship Center in Charlotte, NC.  The church is situated in the same neighborhood where Kee was once involved in crime and drugs, and it focuses on outreach and street ministry to those who would not typically be drawn to the church.

“God delivered me in Charlotte’s inner city from a life that mirrors the ills that we still face today,” Pastor Kee has said.

Kee’s music catalog is considered one of the largest worldwide by an individual publisher, and in 2007, he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.  Add to that 27 Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) Excellence Awards, 21 Stellar Awards, seven Grammy nominations, and numerous other accolades, and you can see that John P. Kee is a force to be reckoned with in contemporary gospel music.

Favorite lyrics:

Stand for holiness
Stand for righteousness
And be counted among them
That shall reign with Him
You stand when friends are gone
Stand when you’re all alone
And believe He shall receive His own

Sweet spot:  From 3:04 through 3:38 and right down to the end of the song.
