Monday Melody – Standing in the Gap

I praise God for enduring friendships that span time and distance and remain strong throughout the years.  I caught up with my girl Fab this weekend and was blessed again by the gift that God has given us.  Stay close to your true friends, guys!

Song/Album: “Standing in the Gap” by Babbie Mason on the album Standing in the Gap.

Why it made the cut:   I think that if I could dedicate one song to my friends, it would be “Standing In The Gap.”  It’s the quintessential intercessor’s song.  Twenty years after it first hit the airwaves, this song still gives me goosebumps as I consider how perfectly Babbie Mason has crafted it to reflect heartfelt prayer for loved ones.

Beyond the lyrics and arrangement, the power of the song lies in the strength of numbers:  the stellar voices of Helen Baylor and Cindy Morgan adding to the encouragement that flows from Babbie’s voice.  This triumvirate of power vocals, plus the elevations and the rich harmonies by the backing choir, make this a classic contemporary gospel hit.

Artist:  Babbie Mason is a mega talent who draws audiences, not just with her singing and songwriting, but with humor and humility.  I first saw her minister at a Women at Faith Conference and was wowed by her vocal skills and testimony to God’s faithfulness throughout her life.

Performing live began very early for Babbie; at age nine, she became the pianist and choir director at her father’s church.  Babbie’s songs encompass many Christian music genres, and her works have been recorded by artists including Larnelle Harris, CeCe Winans, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, and Steve Green.

The winner of two Dove awards and two ASCAP awards, and the recipient of numerous Grammy, Stellar, and Dove nominations, this singer, songwriter, and TV talk show host was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

Babbie and her husband, Charles, have hosted music workshops for those wanting to pursue music ministry, and she is well known as a speaker and performer at women’s conferences throughout America.

Her most recent work is her book, “Embraced by God,” and the accompanying CD, “Embrace,” her 24th music project.

Favorite lyrics:

I’ll be standing in the gap for you
Just remember someone, somewhere
Is praying for you
Calling out your name
Praying for your strength
I’ll be standing in the gap for you

Sweet spots:  The bridge at 2:10 and the elevation at 2:38 when the choir joins in.
