Grateful for this holiday weekend to recharge batteries and replenish my mind and heart. Whitney’s funeral brought tears and, at times, smiles. I celebrated the homegoing of a woman who blessed us all with her immense singing gift.
Song/Album: “Worthy” by CeCe Winans on the album “Thy Kingdom Come.”
Why it made the cut: If you ever need an anthem of encouragement, this song is it. The two-pronged message of our worthiness as God’s children, and His worthiness to be worshiped, clears up any misconceptions I may have about who I am and Whose I am. The catchy syncopation, island vibe, resonating male backup vocals, groovy guitar licks, and the sheer positive energy that Ms. CeCe pours into this song give me a spiritual boost and place me on a praise pathway. Glory!
Artist: Ms. CeCe Winans (real name: Mrs. Priscilla Love) is the first female gospel musician I ever listened to seriously, way before I got saved. From her time on the Praise The Lord (PTL) TV program (remember those days?) with her brother BeBe, CeCe always exuded class, elegance, purity, and true love for the Lord.
CeCe continues to be a staple of Christian music, having added to her enduring career as a singer the titles of songwriter, actress, author, talk-show host, speaker, and philanthropist. A few years ago, CeCe created Always Sisters Forever Brothers (ASFB), an annual conference aimed at empowering young adults through motivational teaching and worship.
She’s the recipient of 10 Grammy awards, 20 Dove awards, and seven Stellar awards. Bravo, Ms. CeCe! She and BeBe received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last October.
For God so loved the world He gave
His only Son’s life
So that two millennia later
We can go walking in that light
So that nothing and no-one
Could separate us from that right
Let’s be worthy!
Let’s be worthy!
Sweet spots: Well, there are several. I truly love the entire song; it stirs up the island girl in me and gets me dancing and raising hands in praise, but when she ramps it up at the bridge, beginning at 3:42; hey, it’s on!
